  •   PENNSYLVANIA
    Pennsylvania

  • Military Extension Policy

  • The Pennsylvania driver’s license of a service person on active duty in the United States Armed Forces will continue to be valid as long as active service continues outside the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and for an additional 45 days after returning to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or following separation from the Armed Forces. This also applies to the Pennsylvania drivers’ licenses of the service person’s spouse and dependent child(ren) who reside in the same household.
Service persons and their family members may also choose to renew their licenses at four-year intervals. A renewal application will be mailed to your address as listed on our records approximately three months prior to your license expiration date. After you return your renewal along with the processing fees to the Bureau of Driver Licensing, you will receive either a camera card for a photo license or an exempt from photo driver’s license camera card which must be signed and returned to the Bureau of Driver Licensing for processing a valid without photo driver’s license.
In order for a military person to drive with an expired driver’s license, it must be legible and in the possession of the service person and/or family member(s). Each service person must also have military documents in his/her possession indicating the service assignment outside the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania does not issue special licenses to military personnel, nor does it affix a special stamp to these licenses. If you need a license due to loss, change of name or change of address when your driver’s license has expired, you must renew it in order for PennDOTto produce a license.
When the Pennsylvania driver’s license has expired, a duplicate license cannot be produced to replace a lost, stolen or mutilated license, nor can a replacement license or update card be issued containing a change of information such as name or address. You must renew the driver’s license in these situations.

Driver Licensing forms are also available at www.dmv.state.pa.us. Among the most commonly requested by military customers are:

    .. DL-143 - for renewal of a non-commercial driver’s license
    .. DL-143CD - for renewal of a commercial driver’s license (CDL)
.. DL-80 - for a duplicate non-commercial driver’s license (cannot be used if your driver’s license is expired)
.. DL-80CD - for a duplicate CDL (cannot be used if your driver license shows as expired)
.. DL-176 - for notification of military status
    .. DL-298 - service person request for a non-commercial PA driver’s license

  •   WASHINGTON
    Washington

  • Military Extension Policy

  • Washington issues a license to military service members and their families with the word “military” in the place of the expiration date. These individuals do not have to renew their driver licenses for the length of their military service.
    Who qualifies?

    * Members of the armed forces on active duty.
    * Members of the National Guard and reservists called to duty for 180 days or more.
    * Spouses and dependents of military personnel.

    When will the license expire?
    * The license is valid until 90 days after honorable discharge from active duty, unless it is suspended, cancelled, or revoked for a cause provided by law.
    * A “military” driver license issued to a reservist who has been called to active duty, or the spouse or dependent child of the reservist, remains in effect only while the person remains on active duty.

    How to apply
    1. Go to any driver licensing office.
    2. Present your Washington State driver license and proof of active duty military service.
    3. If you are a spouse or child dependent, present your Washington State driver license and dependent identification card.
    4. Pay the $10 replacement fee by check or money order.

If you have a “military” driver license or a regular license that remains in effect for the length of your service even though the expiration date has passed, you should carry your military identification card as evidence that the license is valid. A spouse or dependent child should carry their dependent identification card.
A "military" license is not required, your driver license remains in effect under the same conditions as a license with “military,” even after the expiration date has passed. However, getting a license with “military” on it will ensure that we will keep a record of your license for the entire length of your military service, and make it easier for private businesses and government officials to determine that your license is valid.
